Am I Dead?

When the Valet brings Garcin into the room, Garcin asks for his toothbrush and where the bed is. The Valet justs laughs at him and knows that Garcin has not accepted his death yet. Garcin then begins to get scared because the Valet does not have any eyelids and he fears that he has to keep his eyes open for eternity. The Valet just calmly reminds him that he is dead. When people die and go on to the next world, they do not believe they are dead and simply ask for their belongings. Those who guide them to the next world find it humorous because that is how everyone reacts.

Why was I sent to Hell?

In the one-act play, No Exit, Garcin, Inez, and Estelle have all been damned and they are brought into the same room. Once everyone arrives, they try to find out why they have been sent to hell by exploring their past and any sins they had committed. At first, they lie to each other where Garcin says he was executed for being a pacifist and Estelle, pneumonia, but Inez tells them to stop lying to each other and confess to their crimes. In reality, Garcin had often cheated in front of his wife and even in front of her, Estelle had cheated on her husband and drowned her baby, and Inez had seduced her cousin's wife while living with them. All of these crimes are related in which they all cheated on their loved ones.
